CHOOSING MEDICAL CARE AFTER DIAGNOSIS

Choose a doctor after careful consideration; check training, certification, experience, frequency of handling treatments, etc..

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, and not many physicians have experience in handling mesothelioma cases.  For treatment options such as chemotherapy, finding medical care is not very difficult; however, for other specialized treatment options, choosing doctors who have specialized experienced in handling mesothelioma cases would be better.

A "specialist" physician is one who has attained certain training standards in a specific field and has a certification given by a specialty board.  A "specialist" physician may also choose a "sub-specialty" to further enhance their expertise.  Choose a physician who is specialized in mesothelioma treatment as far as possible.

Make a list of questions you should ask the physician.

For example:
  • What is the surgeon's specialty, and does he or she have a sub-specialty?
  • Has the doctor gone through specific training in handling the type of mesothelioma cancer you have?
  • Is the doctor "board certified"?
  • How long has the doctor been practicing?
  • How many mesothelioma cases has the doctor handled and when?
  • Does the doctor have experience in handling the type of cancer you have contracted?
  • Is the surgeon able to explain well the type of treatment you need, and how to go about it?
  • If any treatment option has been recommended, ask the doctor what could be the results of not undergoing the suggested options?
  • Is the doctor affiliated with any hospitals?
  • If the doctor goes on a holiday, who would be taking care of your treatment?
  • Is the type of medical insurance you have accepted by the doctor or hospital?
A lot of ongoing research is being carried out in the treatment of mesothelioma, which helps a patient survive for longer periods of time.  Find out if your doctor is aware of such treatment options and what are the related risks or advantages.

If your attorney has many years of specialized experience in handling mesothelioma cases, you can take his or her support in finding the right medical care for treatment.
